야코프 스미르노프라고 불리우는 소련출신 코미디언이 처음으로 미국에 왔을 때 When a Russian comedian called 'Yakov Smirnoff' first came to the United States， 그는 미국의 식품점의 수많은 인스턴트 식품들을 보고 놀랐다 he was shocked to see many instant products in American grocery stores. 그는 말한다 He says，"내가 처음 쇼핑갔을 때， 분유가 눈에 띄었다 On my first shopping trip， I saw powdered milk. 그냥 물만 첨가하면 우유가 된다 you just add water， and you get milk. 그리고 오렌지주스 분말이 보였다 Then I saw powdered orange juice. 물만 부으면 오렌지쥬스가 된다 you just add water， and you get orange juice. 그 다음 베이비 파우다가 눈에 띄었고 난 이렇게 생각했다 And then I saw baby powder， and I thought to myself. "와， 대단한 나라네!" "What a country!"
스미르노프는 유머를 말하고 있지만 우리는 그리스도인의 변화에 관해 비슷한 추측을 한다 Smirnoff is joking but we make similar assumptions about Christian Transformation. 우리는 사람들이 구원받을 때 순식간에 변화한다고 생각한다 We think that people change instantly at salvation. 어떤 이들은 이것을 회개와 갱신이라 부른다 Some people call it repentance and renewal. 다른 이들은 이것을 신자의 성화라고 부른다 Some others call it Sanctification of the believer. 많은 사람들이 죄에 대한 어떤 빠른 해결책을 기대한다 Many people expect some quick fix to sin. 우리는 이렇게 생각한다 We think: '어떤 이가 그리스도를 구주로 받아들일 때 when someone accepts Jesus Christ as Savior， 그의 습관과 태도와 성품에 즉각적이고 본질적이며 기적적인 변화가 일어난다 there is an immediate， substantial， miraculous change in his habits， attitudes， and character.'
우리는 마치 식품점에 가는 것처럼 교회에 간다 We go to church as if we are going to the grocery store. 인스턴트 분말 그리스도인처럼 Like an instant-powdered Christian. 단지 물만 첨가하면 제자가 탄생한다 Just add water and disciples are born?
불행히도 순간적으로 제자가 되는 그러한 분말은 없다 Unfortunately， there is no such powder that makes disciples right away. 제자는 태어나는 것이 아니라， 만들어진다 Disciples are not born， but made. 예수의 제자는 시험과 고난과 고초를 통해 천천히 양육되어진다 Jesus' disciples are slowly raised through trials， suffering， and hardships. 제자도는 평생의 여정이다 Discipleship is a life-long journey.
