[휴목사의 튀는 영어]
어렸을 때 필자는 부모님의 집에서 사는 대가가 너무 크다고 생각했다 When I was young， I thought the cost of living in my parents'home was too high. 지금 돌아다 보면， 얼마나 바보 같은 생각이었는지 Looking back， what a ridiculous idea it was. 부모님은 집에서 사는 것에 대해 한 푼도 청구하지 않으셨다 My parents never charged me a cent for living at home. 오직 유일한 대가는 순종이었다 The only 'cost'was obedience. 단지 필자는 깨끗이 치우고 공손하며 진실하고 그리고 교회에 가는 것과 같은 규칙들에 순종해야 했었던 것이다 I simply had to obey rules like clean up， be polite， tell the truth， and go to church. 하지만 부모님은 내가 불순종하였다고 내쫓지는 않으셨다 My parents didn't kick me out for my disobedience， however. 그냥 그분들은 계속해서 말씀하셨다 They just kept saying: "규율은 너를 보호하려 하는 것이지， 해치는 것이 아니란다 The rules are to protect you， not harm you."
약속의 땅에서의 삶의 대가도 같은 것이었다 The cost of living in the Promised Land was the same: "순종이었다 obedience." 모세는 백성들에게 '하나님의 축복은 그들의 순종에 달려있다'는 것을 지속해서 상기시켰다 Moses continued to remind the people that 'God's blessings would depend on their obedience (신명기 Deut. 30:16)'.
어떤 이들은 성경에는 규칙이 너무 많다고 생각한다 Some people think that the Bible has too many rules. '하나님의 명령은 우리의 유익을 위함이라'는 것을 그들이 알았으면 좋겠다 I wish they could see that 'God's commands are for our good'. 하나님의 규칙은 스포츠 규칙과도 같다 God's rules are like the rules for sports: '축구， 야구， 농구 등등 soccer， base ball， basket ball， etc'. 규칙은 선수들이 경기를 더 잘하고 안전하게 하도록 도와준다 The rules help the players to play the game better and safely. 하나님의 규칙은 우리가 더 잘 그리고 안전하게 살도록 해준다 God's rules allow us to live better and safely.
